The GIRL VS NATURE Life explores ways to nourish your hair from within, empower your mind and elevate your soul.
So you already know that water is essential to life and that it plays such a vital role in our bodies, removing toxins, regulating body temperature and helping our organs to absorb nutrients.1 But how can drinking water actually benefit your locs? Well, here are five ways drinking water can benefit your locs and contribute to growing healthy locs.
*DISCLAIMER: Please note, I am a Hair Drama Specialist not a Medical Adviser. So please use this post for guidance only and seek professional assistance from your GP or other health practitioners.
#1 Keeps your locs hydrated

Asides from keeping our locs moist from the outside by washing them or spraying with water, for example, it is also important that we hydrate our locs from within. Just like our bodies, our locs too can suffer from dehydration, become brittle and potentially break off. To prevent this, it is essential that we cultivate good habits to help our hair grow as healthy as possible. Drinking water is one of the best ways to hydrate your locs from within. Our locs are like plants and just like a plant they need water to thrive.
#2 Provides your locs with nutrients
Drinking water helps to ensure that necessary proteins and essential vitamins reach your hair follicles. Your hair follicles are responsible for hair growth2 and providing them with water helps to build the base for stronger and healthier loc growth. The changes to your locs will not be immediately visible once you start increasing your water intake but with overtime, you will see results! without water, your locs will not get access to the proper nutrition and may start to lose their lustre. Of course, applying a hair mask or a leave-in conditioner might seem a great solution to give your locs some instant nutrition but this is only a short term fix and you will need to provide these nutrients to your locs from within sooner or later.
#3 Helps fight dry scalp

Dehydration is one of the most common causes of dry scalp. The scalp serves as a barrier between you and any pollutants in your immediate environment. it is also the foundation of your locs and needs to be kept in good condition in order to create an optimal environment for hair growth. Through the scalp, the hair follicles grow and if your scalp is dry, it probably means that water is not reaching your hair follicles and this will impact the quality of hair that is produced. So make sure to drink plenty of water to replenish your scalp and reduce the chances of itchiness, dryness and dandruff developing. If you are experiencing dry, itchy scalp, I also recommend using a hydrating shampoo to help combat the problem.
#4 Helps to build stronger locs
Our hair strands come in different sizes and some people are born with thicker hair strands than others. The thickness of your hair strands is largely determined by genetic factors.3 This sounds disappointing if you already know you don’t have very thick hair. But there is hope! Did you know that water is the 2nd largest component of your hair and it makes up 25% of the total weight of a single strand of hair? 4 Pretty cool, huh? So even if your hair is not the thickest, you can achieve your thickest, strongest and healthiest strands by drinking water on a regular basis.
#5 Boosts loc growth
Growing a beautiful luscious crown of locs is as easy as drinking water! Of course, it’s not the only secret to growing and maintaining healthy locs but it plays a major part in it. It’s also a cheap and effective way to achieving great looking locs. Drinking water:
- Hydrates your locs from within
- Forms an optimal environment for hair growth
- Helps essential proteins and vitamins reach your hair follicles
- Makes up part of your hair composition creating stronger and healthier looking locs!

How easy is that! All you have to do is make drinking water a part of your daily routine. But in case you are wondering how much water you should be drinking to grow healthy locs, look out for my next post on The Loc Life. Sign up to my blog here, so you don’t miss it!
