Hi, I’m Cocoa
And welcome to GIRL vs NATURE.
Do you sometimes feel like you’re at war with your hair? Yeah me too! Sometimes dealing with natural hair can feel like a real struggle that only you seem to understand. I honestly felt this way for a very long time and in 2015 I started GIRL vs NATURE as an online journal where I laid down all my natural hair frustrations and challenges. Humour was my vice and it worked like magic. In time, I learned to ease up about my natural hair problems and now I have grown to appreciate and embrace my natural hair.
Your natural journey doesn’t have to be a struggle.
I believe that our relationship with our hair should be a healthy one. Not opposed to nature but working together with it. It took me a while to understand this concept so at the beginning of my journey it was a real struggle. But it does not have to be that way at all.
My hope is that through reading my journal other young women who may be struggling on their own natural hair journey realise that they are not alone. That there is someone else out there just like them who totally understands exactly what they are feeling. But more importantly, I hope my journal encourages more women with natural hair to see that dealing with our hair doesn’t always have to be a struggle. We may not be able to change our hair texture or permanently alter our hair type but we can change how react to and deal with our hair. Yes, our hair can sometimes get out of control, decide to do its own thing and not listen to or do what we want it to and that can be very frustrating! But the truth is your hair was born with its own personality and the sooner you understand that the sooner you and your hair will both get along and enjoy a beautiful life together.
We may not be able to change our hair texture or permanently alter our hair type but we can change how we react to and deal with our hair.
Natural and Loc’d
My personal journey began way back in 2010. I made the decision to go natural because my hair was completely damaged as a result of excessive chemical treatments, terrible hair care habits and my impeccable talent for overly stressing about everything! In 2017, I took my hair journey to the next level and dared locs. I wasn’t really sure how things would turn out but I think it’s going great so far. In fact, I think it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. But, if you want to know how my hair feels about it, on the other hand, you have to read my journal.
On GIRL vs NATURE, I create content that entertains, motivates and inspires women of colour to develop a more positive relationship with their natural hair be it loose or locd. So please feel free to explore my site and discover the goodness nature has in store for you.
